04.25.2026 — Artistic action promoted by the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia on the occasion of Sant Jordi: “Llum Primigènia”
To celebrate Sant Jordi’s Day, the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia presents, in collaboration with artist Ignasi Cristià, the audiovisual installation “Llum primigènia”, which offers a contemporary and symbolic rereading of the legend of Sant Jordi.
The installation is conceived from Gustav Mahler’s lied Urlicht and unfolds as a sequence of audiovisual tableaux, conceived as digital altarpieces. Each image has been developed through composition, scenography, and editing to create a contemplative visual, musical, and spatial experience.
The dragon, the maiden, and Sant Jordi appear as parts of ourselves: the dragon as fear and the power of self-destruction; the maiden as reason, culture, and spirituality; and Sant Jordi as the part capable of facing the conflict and moving through it toward an inner light.
The piece is displayed on a vertical screen 14 meters high and 3 meters wide, and incorporates within the composition the presence of Josep Maria Subirachs’s sculpture of Sant Jordi, located on the Jubé balcony. The device functions as an ephemeral visual project integrated into the temple.
After the first version presented in April 2025, the piece has been revised and updated this year. The project grows and deepens in its form: a site-specific artistic audiovisual installation, conceived to dialogue with the central nave.
